Because evergreen content matters so much in SEO and in content creation in general, I did my best to make this piece genuinely rich and cover every angle of the topic. This article itself is an example of evergreen content, and I update it regularly. In other words, whenever a new point gets added to what I know about this subject, I’ll definitely update this article.

This content is still being updated and isn’t finished yet.

What Evergreen Content Means

By evergreen content we mean content that stays valid and useful over time. The question is: what kind of content actually stays valid and useful over time?

Content That’s About Unchangeable Things and a Fact

For example, these are evergreen pieces because they’re always valid and never change:

  • Ludwig van Beethoven was a German musician and composer; he was a key figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western music and is considered one of the greatest European composers.
  • Gole Aftabgardoon is the name of the first album by the band Arian, released in 2000; the tracks were arranged by Ninef Aminkhas, most of the lyrics were written by Ali Pahlavan, and the songs were performed by Ali Pahlavan and Payam Salehi.
  • The 5A model, introduced by Philip Kotler in his book Marketing 4.0, is one of the practical tools in marketing that helps you understand the customer journey from the first encounter with a brand to becoming a loyal advocate.

In contrast to the examples above, the ones below aren’t evergreen and may lose their value:

  • Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata is the most popular piece of music among Iranian teenagers this month (is this still valid for someone reading the text next year?)
  • Ali Pahlavan said they’ll release a new Gole Aftabgardoon track next year (is this valid for someone reading the text today?)
  • Philip Kotler and Sharokh Kiumarsi released the 8S marketing model today, and it’s the best model for multichannel marketing on social media with the help of ChatGPT (if ChatGPT disappears or a better model comes along, is this still valid?)

Content That’s Constantly Being Updated

For example, take a website like coinmarketcap. It has a list of cryptocurrencies along with crypto exchanges and more. The site has a separate page for each coin with full details like price, market cap, and so on, and these pages get updated regularly. Since market caps and coin prices change by the second, if a page’s information isn’t updated it loses its validity and is no longer reliable. So if you have content that isn’t always valid but you’re always updating it, you’ve got evergreen content. For instance:

  • Have a piece titled “The Best Styles of This Year” and update it every year.
  • Have a page titled “Live Dollar Price” and update it in real time using APIs.
  • Have a piece titled “A Reference for Google Algorithms” and update it as each algorithm is introduced.

Why Evergreen Content?

Evergreen content is a long-term investment, because things like news, trends, and product announcements are time-bound and have a short lifespan, whereas a piece of evergreen content can hold its value for years and help your brand. Here are the benefits of evergreen content:

Benefits of evergreen content

Faster and More Efficient Search Engine Optimization

A piece of evergreen content is always valid and popular, so search engines, whose job is to show users up-to-date content, pay more attention to this kind of content. That helps you get a good ranking for the keyword you’re targeting and hold onto that ranking over time.

Improved Website Traffic

Evergreen articles and their various formats can continuously drive significant organic traffic to your site, as long as they come with relevant content and provide up-to-date information. Naturally, the more targeted traffic you get, the more it helps improve your business.

Establishing You as an Authority

When you provide valuable, informative content, you and your brand become known as a thought leader in your field and industry. In the end, this turns your business into a trusted name, which leads to more engagement, higher traffic, and the building of a credible, reliable brand.

Building Trust

You can only become an authority in your industry when people trust you, and one of the best ways to win your target audience’s trust is to consistently give them the information they need, answer their questions, and solve their problems. Evergreen content pursues exactly this goal; it’s both optimized for search engines and, because it’s always up to date, it meets your audience’s needs too.

Increasing Brand Engagement

By attracting traffic, building trust, and establishing you as an authority in the industry, evergreen content increases your brand’s engagement with your target audience. This engagement can include more interaction on social media and people sharing your content on other sites, or interacting with the content itself, like leaving comments.

Increasing Conversion Rate

Like any other content marketing strategy, the main benefit of evergreen content is a higher conversion rate; that is, more organic traffic, brand engagement, and customer trust ultimately lead to generating more leads, higher sales, and overall business success.

Future-Proofing Your Content Strategy

As I said, writing evergreen content is like a long-term investment; the information you share stays appealing, relevant, and valuable to your audience long after it’s published. That’s why these posts keep showing up in search results over the long run and keep bringing you traffic.

Since an evergreen article can stay relevant and useful for a long time, it has the ability to attract other websites too. If credible sites in your industry link to your evergreen post, your search engine ranking goes up and you get more opportunities to attract traffic and conversions.

Updating and Repurposing

Another valuable benefit of evergreen articles is that you can keep using them, whether by updating or repurposing them. For example, you can update an old evergreen post with new information, or you can write a new, relevant long-form post about a topic you’ve already covered in your evergreen content and internally link the two posts together. Over time, this helps you build more evergreen and relevant content on your site.

Improving Your Website’s Value

By creating informative, useful content that stays relevant for years, an evergreen content strategy improves the overall value and quality of your site. That means you turn your site into an important source of information in your industry and establish your brand as a primary authority for your target audience.
